Incident Press Release - Accident with Injuries
December 25th, 2024 - Cole County MO.
At approximately 17:22 hours on Wednesday, December 25th, Cole County Public Safety Agencies were dispatched to an Accident with Injuries in the 6100 block of Highway 54, near Brazito.
Initial reports indicated two vehicles were involved with several injured occupants. The first arriving EMS chief officer located two vehicles with heavy damage and a total of 8 patients requiring medical attention. The Cole County EMS Emergency Communications Center upgraded the call to a Mass Casualty Incident (A Mass Casualty Incident is a term utilized to describe the scope of the incident in terms of resource needs and does not necessarily represent the extent of injuries). As a result, all 8 on-duty Cole County EMS Ambulances and 3 additional chief officers were assigned to the call.
1 patient required extrication from the vehicle by Cole County Fire Protection District. All 8 patients were provided stabilizing care and eventually transported to a trauma center in Columbia MO. All patients were in stable condition at the time of transport, with injuries ranging from minor to major.
This incident significantly taxed Cole County EMS resources due to the unavailability of air medical helicopters caused by inclement weather. Seven of the eight on-duty ambulances were committed to extended transports.
To ensure continued emergency response coverage, the incident commander initiated a recall of off-duty EMS personnel to staff reserve ambulances. Eight off-duty EMS personnel promptly returned to duty to handle additional calls for service. Mutual-aid from Miller County Ambulance District, Osage Ambulance District, and Callaway County EMS, also assisted with maintaining coverage in the county.
In total 28 EMS personnel responded to the incident and recall. Cole County EMS was assisted on scene by resources from Cole County Fire Protection District, Cole County Sheriff's Department, Cole County First Responders, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and Jefferson City Police Department Emergency Communications.
For further information regarding this incident, please contact the Missouri Highway Patrol.

📚🚑 **Congratulations to the Fall 2024 EMT Class!** 🚑📚
Tonight, our fall EMT program wrapped up with their final testing scenarios, tackling three simulated emergency and trauma calls and a challenging mass casualty incident. These future EMS professionals managed each situation as if they were already licensed providers, demonstrating their hard work and dedication.
A huge thank you to our primary instructor and EMS Education Coordinator, Kelly Johnson, for leading another outstanding program. We are also incredibly grateful for our patient volunteers and the Osage EMS staff who gave their time—often on their days off—to mentor, guide, and ensure these students' success.
Stay tuned for graduation pictures tomorrow as we celebrate the accomplishments of this talented group! 🎉
